Ladies, are you seeing more hair going down the shower drain than usual?
Don't panic. It doesn't necessarily mean your hair is thinning or you’re going to end up with bald patches. Dermatologist Dr. Francesca Fusco says the average person loses about40 strands of hair a day – to make room for the new strands coming in underneath. And most of it sheds when you shampoo. But since women are washing their hair less frequently these days – thanks to dry shampoo – it generally means more hair is coming out with every wash. Which means, if you only wash your hair once a week, you could be losing 200 hairs during that single shower – which can really seem like a lot.
So, when should you worry? If you’re losing a thousand hairs a day, that would be considered abnormal. If that’s happening, Dr. Fusco recommends putting the day’s “hair harvest” in a plastic sandwich bag – and taking it to your dermatologist to discuss it.
