Is it ever ok to have high blood pressure?
Sometimes it IS okay for the elderly to have high blood pressure! According to the Archives of Internal Medicine, if you have a loved one, age 85 or older, with high blood pressure, don't worry about it. High blood pressure in people who are very elderly is an indication of better health, while lower numbers could mean trouble. Dr. James Goodwin is a professor of geriatric medicine - and he says high blood pressure in the very old is simply a sign that their heart is pumping strongly and predicts an even longer life! Low blood pressure could mean the heart isn’t pumping efficiently. So, before an elderly loved one goes on blood pressure meds, have a talk with their doctor to see if it’s necessary.
